The Spirit Historians

Dr. Geoffrey Ward completed his undergraduate degree in History at the University of Western Ontario in Canada before returning home to Barbados. He was awarded his PhD from the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill Campus) in 2022, investigating the political, social and economic interactions between the Barbadian Populace and British naval personnel in the American Revolution. He is currently an R.L. Seale / University of the West Indies post doctoral fellow, investigating Barbados' rum exports between 1775 and 1820. Dr. Ward is a founding member of the Barbados Rum Club and thoroughly enjoys investigating the history – and taste – of rums from around the world.

Dr. Seth Kamil attended undergraduate at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst and completed his PhD in American History at Columbia University in 2024. His thesis, “The Inter-Colonial Provisioning of Barbados from New York and New Jersey, 1650-1765,” addressed the role of the Middle Colonies supporting and sustaining the sugar cane plantation systems of the West Indies. His current research expands the New York-Barbados historic connection. He is a Fellow of the Academy of New York Historians. Dr. Kamil is President of Big Onion Walking Tours and Historical Consulting. He recently won a Jamaican rum blending contest for Appleton Master Blender Joy Spence.
